What Is Developmental Editing?

Developmental editing is all about the foundational elements of your story. Whether you're writing a memoir or creating an epic battle between man and dragon, there are milestones necessary to create a compelling story arc. To keep your reader hooked, we'll also need plenty of tension.

Some areas of focus will be:
  • World Building
  • Character Development
  • Storyline Basics
  • Plot Hole Fixes

Believe it or not, these elements are also applicable to non-fiction writers. I can help you lay a foundation that includes stellar delivery, context where appropriate, and shave off words that don't further your themes or overarching message. We'll bring the hero's journey into the mix to make sure that your readers stay hooked.

Prices vary according to the complexity of the project. Please contact me for additional pricing.

What Is Copyediting?

Copyediting is the process of reviewing your novel, memoir, novella, or other collection of words for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The process of copyediting focuses on the specifics of language, leaving the big picture elements alone. While I use the Oxford comma on my website and any significant published piece, I can and will adhere to any other style guidelines that are common practice (Chicago, AP, etc.).

I only accept pieces for copyediting that have already gone through a developmental editor. This restriction is in place to avoid a disappointing experience for both of us. I can never guarantee positive reviews because writing is subjective, but if you are opposed to working with a developmental editor, you're missing out on a fantastic opportunity to make your book stronger.

I charge $0.035 per word and I always suggest you submit a sample (one to two pages) for copyediting. This will help both of us determine if our working styles are a fit. Contact me for more information on availability.

About me as an author

Camela Thompson About Me
Despite dabbling in many genres, there is a driving force behind my stories. I love writing about women who shine in difficult circumstances. I will back them up against the wall and sit amazed as they manage to come out on the other side stronger than ever.

For examples of my nonfiction work, please refer to my marketing consulting website.
