Warning: There are adult themes and language in this podcast.

This week Camela Thompson is joined by Lance Thompson and Dr. Steve Matthewson to discuss horror movies. Their assignment was to watch Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and Big Ass Spider. Because of the array of movies covered, they discuss many more films, the tropes in horror, and why we are drawn to fear.

We'd love to hear what you think! If you have any suggestions or ideas, please contact us using the Contact page, the email link at the top, or leave us a comment.

Episode 9: Ghosts and Demons

Warning: This podcast contains adult language and themes

This week Father Les Carpenter, an Episcopalian priest, joins Z.D. Gladstone and Camela Thompson to discuss the presence of ghosts and demons in this world. He explains his belief that demonic influences look less like what Hollywood presents and more like corruption in power and negative social phenomenon. Racism was used as an example, and the cohosts found the argument very interesting. The haunting at Camela's house, why people seek to make spiritual connections, and his interesting opinion on Halloween were also topics of conversation.

We'd love to hear from you if you have any topic ideas, suggestions, feedback, or true stories you would like to contribute. If your email is particularly compelling, we may invite you to be a guest on the show. Contact us using the Contact tab or the email icon at the top of the screen.

Episode 8: Dracula

Warning: This podcast contains adult content and language.

After dancing around Bram Stoker's Dracula for weeks, Z.D. Gladstone and Camela Thompson delve into Stoker's novel and several of the movies the book influenced. Horror from the Victorian and Edwardian eras had a strong contrast of beauty and fear, and not all of the successive films reflected this dichotomy. We look at the historical view of women, strangers, and monsters and how they have evolved over time. A viewpoint on why Gary Oldman's character was the most relatable Dracula--outside of his considerable acting talent--is also offered.

Have a Dracula influenced film we have not covered or local myths and urban legends you would like broadcasted? Send them our way through the comments or Contact links on this website. We'd love to hear from you.

Episode 7: Hellsing Ultimate

Warning: This podcast contains adult content and language.

Camela Thompson and Z.D. Gladstone discuss Hellsing Ultimate, a Japanese animation series with virgin vampires, rogue Nazis, and zealot Catholic armies. In the tradition of anime, the characters have dramatic and involved backstories. The heroes are flawed, the villains are plentiful, and everyone has a shootout. The mythology strikes close to Bram Stoker's Dracula with some very unique twists and turns. Both podcast cohosts had a hard time recalling any other movie, television series, or book with such an epic body count.

Episode 6: Vampires in Videogames

Warning: This podcast contains some adult language.

This week Brandon Erickson, a video game reviewer and record holder, stops by to discuss vampires in video games. We talk about the evolution of game play from its pixilated origins to the complex open world play that is possible today. As with all things geekery, opinions are strong. Naturally there was some debate involved.

One of our debates involved the Resident Evil video games vs. movies. If you have a strong opinion about the movies or video games (one is better, they both are awesome, they both suck), email Camela Thompson (the email address is on the Contact page or at the top of this page by clicking on the mail icon). Email segments may be read on our podcast, and if your argument strikes us as particularly brilliant, we may invite you to be a guest on our show. The deadline for contributions for this topic is August 15, 2015.

As always, we would love to hear your feedback and we love suggestions for future shows. If you are interested in being a guest, please let us know.

Episode 5: For the Love of Werewolves

Warning: This podcast contains some adult content.

Patricia D. Eddy joins Camela Thompson and Z.D. Gladstone to discuss one of our favorite topics: Werewolves! We look at the origins, variations, and call out some of our favorites. We have a strong theory on why they have gained a ton of ground in romance novels.

Minor Correction: Oz was actually transformed by a cousin. Other than that, Z.D. is pretty spot on.

Warning: This podcast was intended for mature audiences only.

Michael G. Munz joined Z.D. Gladstone and Camela Thompson to discuss Greek mythology and how it still makes its presence known today. Somehow they managed to tie in tattoos, books, movies, television shows, and pandas. No really. Pandas.

As always, we'd love to hear from you! Let us know what you think and what else we should cover.

Episode Three: Contemporary Fairy Tales

Warning: There is some adult language. Listen at your own discretion.

Author Sheri Williams joins Z.D. Gladstone and Camela Thompson this week to discuss fairy tales. They look at the oral history, Grimm, and other historical renditions before delving into the more modern interpretations and what they say about society at the time of rendering. Perhaps the state of our culture at the time of development is more to blame than the individuals pushing the product. After all, we're taught to cater to our audiences.

Exciting News! You can now find Shadows on the Sound on iTunes Podcasts.

The hosts would love to hear from you! If you have any suggestions or comments, please either leave a comment or use the Contact page to reach out.

Episode Two: Vampire Sexuality

Warning: This episode contains adult language and should not be played by or in the earshot of people under the age of 18.

Patricia D. Eddy joins Z.D. Gladstone and I to discuss vampire sexuality. We look at vampires who are capable of sex (both dead and alive) and vampires who are not along with our preferences, things we find strange, and things to avoid. We discuss a few of our favorite steamy series. This was a fun topic!

An interview of del Toro is brought up in this podcast and can be found here. We did not cite a direct quote - it was paraphrased, and I'm hoping the interview was fudged or taken out of context. Opinions were based on the assumption that the article was legitimate. We'll state again that we enjoy The Strain and his contribution to vampires even if we weren't thrilled about some comments.

As always, if you have any comments, suggestions, or questions, please let us know! We would love to hear from you.

Episode One: Vampire Knight

4/8/2015

In this episode, we delve into Vampire Knight, teen angst, anime, and the taboo that lurks behind many vampire relationships.

Introduction to Vampire Knight:
Vampire Knight is based on a shōjo manga series written by Matsuri Hino, first published in 2005. Studio Dean produced the anime adaptation of the series, using many of the same voice actors featured in the drama cds. The show follows Yuki Cross, a teenage girl and a guardian who strives to keep vampires secret from the humans. Yuki's first memory is of a blood stained field of snow where Kaname Kuran, a Pureblood vampire, saved her from an "evil vampire." A vampire-hunter-turned-school-headmaster adopted Yuki, and later Zero Kiryu, a young boy from a family of vampire hunters. The show is set in an eclectic boarding school, designed by vampire Kaname Kuran and Kaien Cross (vampire hunter/adoptive father).

Introduction to the show mythology:
A horrible catastrophe struck the world and vampires crawled forth from the wreckage.
Vampires biologically descended from the original vampires are known as the Pureblood vampires. These Pureblood vampires have their own special power plus the ability to control lesser vampires. They can put their original body into stasis and inhabit younger, willing bodies. In order to keep their bloodlines pure, Purebloods often marry siblings. It’s not considered taboo in their culture, although killing other Purebloods is taboo. Killing another Pureblood allows the Pureblood killer to absorb their powers and is very addictive, so they have dealt with the issue by making it socially unacceptable.

Aristocrat vampires are born vampire but are not "pure" and have human "contamination"  in their lineage. Humans can be converted into a vampire through a Pureblood vampire's bite, but will degenerate until they are a Level E or "The End." A Level E vampire reverts to only the basest of instincts and retains zero humanity. The only way to avoid becoming a Level E is to consume the blood of their Pureblood maker.
